al which is being increasingly used for the treatment and disinfection of water. Ozone itself is the triatomic form of oxygen which has been formed by recombining highly excited oxygen molecules or atoms with other oxygen molecules.
 
; The traditional way of producing ozone is by means of Dielectric Barrier Discharge, however, this method has certain disadvantages which cannot be accepted for every application. A more elegant way of producing ozone, without the drawbacks associated with conventional processes, is by electrolytic ally dissociating water in an electrolyzes which uses a solid polymer membrane as the electrolyte. It has long been known that in such an electrolyzes the reactive intermediate stages of oxygen are formed at the anode and that these can result in the production of ozone when the reaction is suitably controlled.
